Rao Inderjit Singh is an Indian politician from the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party and is presently a minister in the Narendra Modi government.
He belongs to a freedom fighters’ family being the great great grandson of Rao Tula Ram a hero of the 1857 first war of independence against the British rule.
His father was a soldier and the first Chief Minister of Haryana belonging to the farming community.
Singh is a social worker and runs many educational institutions in his native district Rewari as also trusts which cater to the needs of widows, destitute women and children and members of the impoverished classes in need of help and/or education.
Political Career
Singh is currently a member of the 17th Lok Sabha representing the Gurgaon Lok Sabha constituency in Haryana and is Minister of State Independent charge looking after the Ministries of Planning and Statistics & Programme Implementation & MoS Ministry of Corporate Affairs in the Narendra Modi cabinet.
Earlier he has served as MoS External Affairs and MoS Defence & Defence Production from 2004 to 2009 and from 2014 to 2016.
A member of Parliament serving his fifth term, he was also earlier elected to the Haryana Vidhan Sabha 4 times and served as minister in Haryana looking after Forest & Environment, Technical & Medical Education and Food & Civil Supplies at various times in his career.
Extracurricular Activities
Rao Inderjit Singh remained a member of the Indian shooting team from 1987 to 2003 and participated in and won many medals for the country in International events. After retiring from active sports he held the charge of President of Indian Paralympic Association from 2016 till 2019 and is currently the President of the Haryana Rifle Association.
Early Life
Rao was born in 1950 in Rampura village of district Rewari, Haryana, to a landed family and did his schooling from The Lawrence School – Sanawar, Shimla Hills. He graduated with B.A (Hons) from the Hindu College, Delhi University and went on to earn a degree in Law (LL. B.) from the faculty of Law, Delhi University.
He fought his first election after the emergency in 1977 from Jatusana Assembly Constituency on the Vishal Haryana Party ticket and became the youngest MLA in the Haryana Vidhan Sabha from 1977 to 1982. Vishal Haryana party later merged with 6 MLA in the Congress Party in 1978 at the behest of Mrs Indira Gandhi.
Personal Life
He married Ms. Manita Singh in 1976 and has two daughters Arti and Bharti from the union. Both are now married.
